An orthopedist is a doctor who diagnoses and treats problems affecting the musculoskeletal system—your bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and related tissues.

They treat conditions such as:

• Broken bones and sports injuries
• Arthritis and joint pain
• Back and neck problems
• Tendon and ligament injuries
• Joint deformities
• Some conditions with physical therapy, medication, injections, or surgery

An orthopedist may also be called an orthopedic surgeon, even when they recommend nonsurgical treatment.
